This time around Ray won from Perth’s Scott Glazebrook and fellow American Kevin Swindell who was at the venue for the first time.

“It was a tough track,” Ray said. “It was really bouncy, you had to have a lot of car control in that race.  I owe a lot to Mark de Rosa (car owner), he assembles a great team.  Thank you guys for coming, it is a great race in honour of Michael…I really feel part of the family now.”

Glazebrook was the first WA driver home, pocketing a $2000 bonus and after crashing out in spectacular fashion last year, was happy to be on the podium. “I was just hanging in there,” Glazebrook said, “It was a pretty demanding track..it’s a tough race but I am happy.”

Swindell hinted he would like to return for the event next year after collecting the third-placed trophy.

He suffered a setback early on when the third American in the field, Steve Buckwalter, hit a hole and after losing ground, dropped well back.

“The thing just bounced like crazy for three to four laps,” Swindell said.

“It is a good result, this place is tough.”

Glazebrook took the early lead from former Magic Man winner Mark Brown and Rick Geneve while Ray showed his hand early and was up into third after starting in 10th.

Rick Geneve was the first major casualty when he flipped in pits bend in an area that became a bit of a Bermuda Triangle and also claimed Tom Watson and Neville Lance in separate incidents in the first 14 laps.

Paul Robinson collected the Pool Shop Kalamunda award for being fourth while Vaughan Manders was fifth and Queenslander Todd Wanless was sixth.
