Martocci Masters CRSA vs TSRS 305 Sprint Challenge at Penn Can

Susquehanna, PA | Oct. 15, 2011 - Saturday night at the Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna, PA the pit area was overflowing with race cars for the first night of action on the King of the Can weekend. In the 305 Sprint Car challenge race Brett Jaycox led at the start however Tommy Martocci of Kunkletown, PA took the point with an outside pass in turn two. Martocci led while Jaycox, Brian Carber, Tyler Rice and Craig Rochelle were the top five on lap one. Martocci entered lapped traffic on lap seven while a tight race between Jaycox and Carber began to close in...

Martocci was struggling with the lappers as his brakes were glowing red hot and Jaycox and Carber were on his tail tank. Josh Pieniazek did a 360 degree spin in turns one and two on lap 10 but keep his mount going however race officials threw the yellow when they saw Pieniazek spinning with other cars all around him. Martocci still led on the restart but Carber while looking to take over second hopped Jaycox’s right rear tire causing him to lose a couple spots. With a dozen laps complete Martocci led Jaycox, Rice, eighth starter John Virgilo and Carber. Martocci was into lappers again on lap 19 meanwhile Virgilo and Carber kept trading the number four spot.

Rice bypassed Jaycox on lap 21 utilizing the very inside of the speedway and then closed in on the leader. Martocci was again trapped behind lappers and Rice made his move going down the backstretch as Rice took over the lead on lap 22 but the caution flew before the lap was complete as Brett Jaycox and John Matrafailo tangled in turn four. Martocci reassumed the top spot and nailed the restart quickly pulling away from Rice. Virgilo challenged Rice momentarily for second but Rice held the spot. Martocci went on to take the checkers over Rice, Carber who made an outside pass in turn four to take third, Virgilo and Rochelle. Heat wins went to Rice, Jamie Christian, Rochelle and Carber. Consolations were won by Joey Allen and Pieniazek.
