Midgets at The Royale | 1966

Sydney, New South Wales AU | 1966 - The Sydney Showground Speedway, (aka " The Royale") at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Moore Park was one of the great Speedway venues and was claimed by promoters to be the "fastest speedway in the world" in 1937. In this video you'll see Bryan Cunneen in the Max Linklater Holden # 55 and Sherman Cleveland in car 10 in what is arguably one of the greatest midget races ever held at the Royale during the 1966 season. Cunneen won sideways over the line....
Beginning in 1926, The Royale hosted speedway racing for seven decades until the final meeting on April 27, 1996. The track was an "egg shaped" 1/3 mile and competitors knew that when the top deck of the massive grandstand was full of a Saturday night they would get more prize money, as they shared in the "gate" profits.
