Kiwi Stockcars & Superstocks Battle at Palmy... Until the Rain!

video by Wal Joines (http://www.stockcarscene.co.nz/)

Palmerston North, New Zealand | Oct. 29, 2011 - Unfortunately, rain interrupted racing once again at the Robertson Holden International Speedway. Racers were only able to complete qualifying races and one final heat of the Robin Pratt Memorial for Stockcars before the track was saturated...

An outstanding field of 53 Stockcars assembled to do battle, including nine cars travelling from the earlier rainout in Hawkes Bay and a lone Wanganui car. The field was split in half with the top 10 from each heat progressing to three-heat finals, and a repechage (last chance race for non-qualifiers) contributing the remainder of the field.  FULL STORY & RESULTS

Previously known as A Grade Stockcars, Superstocks are a premier class of New Zealand speedway (dirt track racing). Cars are built from the chassis upwards with strong roll cages designed to protect the drivers. Weighing in between 1400 to 1500 kg with powerful engines up to 248 cubic inches, contact between cars can be rugged and is intended as part of the class.

Superstocks are the heavy hitting brigade when it comes to the Kiwi full-contact classes. Purpose built steel chassis' capable of taking and dishing out big hits are usually powered with highly modified V8 engines up to 500hp. These cars, although weighing considerably more, can circulate dirt and clay oval tracks at similar lap times as the Saloons. Mostly built using special racing componentry these cars can also cost lots more than how the driver appears to treat them.
