Collie, Western Australia | Jan. 4, 2013 - The “Kentucky Colonel” Steve Francis has back to back in the first two events of the 2014 Moyle Engines USA Invasion Tour at Quit Collie Speedway Friday night and Manjimup Speedway on Saturday.
NIGHT ONE:
In what many described as a dominating display, Francis led the thirty lap main event from start to finish aboard his Ozmine Racing USA16 BWRC, only being brought back to the field courtesy of a few stoppages throughout the main event.
Twenty four cars were on hand for the opening night of the Invasion Tour with the six heats races producing six different winners. The heat wins going to Francis, Brad Blake, Jason Moyle, Koran Atkinson, Marc Giancola and Lee Watt.
Three dash races were held prior to the main event with Steve Francis dominating the A Dash from Marc Giancola and Brad Blake. The B Dash went to Michael Holmes, Phil Zuidema from Matt Goodlad with the C Dash going to Brad Ludlow over Chris Ferguson and Paul Joss.
American Steve Casebolt who was visiting Western Australian for the first time struggled throughout the night with car issues and started the A main from near the rear of the field.
Steve Francis and Marc Giancola shared the front row for the main event with Francis leading away from the start with a restart called on the first lap for the spun Jamie Moon.
Francis again got the initial jump on the second attempt to start the main event with a huge multi car accident occurring mid pack with cars going in every direction.
Phil Zuidema ended up on top of Warren Oldfield’s car on the main straight with many other cars caught up in the incident. Both Zuidema and Oldfield would restart with Nat Muir and Canberra’s Scott McPherson unable to restart with too much damage.
Francis would yet again get the jump on the field and lead the early laps from Giancola, Blake with American Jeremy Payne moving from sixth into fourth place. American Steve Casebolt retired after five laps with the race settling into a steady pace.
Jay Cardy and Phil Zuidema would come together mid race with Zuidema spinning across the track and being collected by Brad Boley in the process.
Zuidema would restart with Francis doing it easy in the lead, Marc Giancola who was running in second place for the majority of the race would retire to the infield with a broken tail shaft.
In the latter stages of the race Jeremy Payne would pass Brad Blake with a brillant outside pass to move into second place.
A restart would be called with three laps to run courtesy of Alec Melvin making contact with the concrete wall in turn three. Francis would go on to win the opening night of the 2014 Moyle Engines USA Invasion Tour from his fellow countrymen Jeremy Payne, Brad Blake, Lee Watt and Koran Atkinson rounding out the top five. Craig Vosbergen advanced from his twelfth starting position to finish sixth with Jason Oldfield, Michael Holmes, Phil Zuidema, Jay Cardy, Paul Joss and Jamie Moon rounding the finishers.
Steve Francis was very happy to start his Western Australian tour in the best possible fashion, “Great to win here at Collie, the car that Michael Holmes and his team have gave me is a credit to them and I’m looking forward to the remainder of the series”
All the action resumes tonight at Manjimup Speedway for night two of the 2014 Moyle Engines USA Invasion Tour.
