Smee Aims For Three In A Row in POWRi Aussie Midgets
Archerfield, Qld AU | Dec. 4, 2013 - Australian Midget Car Champion Nathan Smee is back again this Saturday night (Dec 7) at Supercheap Auto Archerfield Speedway as Round 5 of the POWRi Australian Midget Super Series rolls into town. Smee has won both of his last two starts here and will aim to make it three wins in a row.
Joining the Series’ 13 contracted drivers are some of the best in Australia for this special 50th Anniversary race. With Round 4 a washout at Lismore last weekend, this round at Archerfield will now mark the 50th Feature race to be run for the lucrative series and the main event has an alluring $2500 prize for the winner. Some special guests have been invited to make the presentations; former Australian Midget Car champions Blair Shepherd and Bob Morgan will be there to do the honours, Ron Wanless is unable to attend due to knee surgery so it’s likely that POWRi Super Series Director Ken Jenkins will take Ron’s place.
Smee - the defending POWRi Series champion - plans to head across ‘the ditch’ to New Zealand to contend the POWRi World Midget Championships in the coming weeks, this will be his last opportunity to race in Australia and make any changes to the car prior to his departure. The battle between Smee and five-time New Zealand Midget Car champion Michael Kendall should be thrilling to watch. This SSS contracted driver is also planning to contend the World Championships in NZ and will look to make the most of the seat-time on Saturday night.
Another duel Smee is likely to encounter is with Queensland’s Brett Thomas. These two competitors made contact in turn 2 of lap 2 in the Round 2 Feature race whilst fighting for the lead. Thomas took out the Round 3 win at Maryborough and Tod Wanless (driving for Brett) took the Round 1 win at Toowoomba so one could say the Q69 Illuminated Industries team is also aiming for a hat-trick of wins.
There’s a swathe of seriously fast racers and previous podium finishers that have also nominated, among them are Matt Smith, Grant Draney and Troy Jenkins, also Matt Greenwood, Matt Jackson and Michael Harders; who’s getting closer to that number one spot on the podium.
Seven divisions are racing this Saturday night; there’ll be around 80 cars so it’s a pretty full schedule including 360 Sprint Cars, Lightning Sprints and Micro Sprints. If big blocks are your thing the Late Models are running as well as the Stock Cars and the Open Sedans. Some great giveaways are planned for the night and of course there’s the 50/50 that’ll give one lucky winner a little pre-Christmas cash.
Spectator gates open at 4pm with the main race program commencing at 6pm, check Facebook or brisbanespeedway.com.au for tickets and times.
